Overview

NTT announced on March 16, 2022 that its P5G private 5G platform would be piloted in early 2022 at Schneider Electric's Lexington Smart Factory in Lexington, Kentucky, the first of Schneider's U.S. plants to become a smart factory showcase site.[1] RCR Wireless reported that NTT's P5G service uses a cloud-based LTE and 5G core from Celona,[2] and in April 2022 described the project as a trial centered on machine vision that detects wear and tear on a factory conveyor.[3] A 2024 article by an NTT DATA executive says NTT DATA developed a private 5G network for the factory.[4]

Technology
Private 5G on NTT's P5G platform, which RCR Wireless reported uses a cloud-based LTE and 5G core from Celona.[1][2]
Vendors and roles
NTT: P5G private 5G platform with managed services.[1] Celona: core network in NTT's P5G service, per RCR Wireless.[2] Schneider Electric: EcoStruxure prefabricated data center used to integrate and test NTT's edge offerings.[1] AVEVA industrial software was part of the trial, per RCR Wireless.[3]
Integrator
NTT.[1] A 2024 article credits NTT DATA with developing the network.[4]
Status
Pilot. NTT said in March 2022 the platform would be piloted in early 2022,[1] and RCR Wireless described a trial in April 2022.[3] A May 2024 article by an NTT DATA executive describes the network as developed but gives no current status;[4] we found no independent later update.

Scale as reported

How the network is used

  • Machine vision: industrial cameras added to factory and warehouse automation to spot faults and wear and tear in near real time (manufacturing and industrial IoT).[1]
  • Planned uses also included managing automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and augmented reality for remote maintenance support.[1]
  • RCR Wireless reported the trial tested whether conveyor images could travel to AVEVA software in the cloud over private 5G instead of the factory Wi-Fi.[3]

Reported results

As reported by the sources below; not independently verified.

  • No measured results were published.[1][3] Schneider's senior vice president for global IT infrastructure told RCR Wireless that if the conveyor case proved its value, it could be replicated across 200 to 300 other plants.[3]
