Overview

Cumucore's core, marketed as the Cumucore Mobile Private Network, is containerized 3GPP 4G EPC (Evolved Packet Core) and 5G core software for private networks that a customer can install on its own premises.[1][2] Cumucore says it is built for small networks, optimized for up to 10,000 users or devices and up to 10 base stations, and can scale across sites by distributing cores geographically.[1] It can run without an internet connection, and Cumucore says its local core let the Operation Connect Carolina disaster-relief networks in North Carolina run in 2024 without depending on high-quality backhaul links.[1][3] Cumucore's main focus is industrial automation, including time-sensitive networking (TSN) and Ethernet (Layer 2) connectivity over 5G.[2][4]

Specifications

Architecture

Core type
Virtualized 3GPP 4G EPC and 5G core, based on containers.[1]
4G EPC
Built from microservices for each 4G core function; components listed are 4G EPC, NB-IoT and eMBMS.[1]
5G core
Cumucore says its 5G core includes the functionality needed for interoperability with 3GPP Release 16, including the network slice selection (NSSF) and network repository (NRF) functions.[1]
5G modes
Not stated on the product page; Cumucore's documentation index describes a 5G core supporting both non-standalone (NSA) and standalone (SA) operation.[5]
Radio compatibility
Cumucore says it has proven interoperability with radios from Nokia, Ericsson, Huawei, Baicells, Datang and O-RAN radios from Accelleran.[1]

Deployment options

Platforms
Bare metal or virtualized platforms such as OpenStack and Kubernetes.[1]
On-premises and offline operation
Installed in the customer's local environment and able to run without internet access, keeping data on site.[2][1]
Multi-site
Scales by distributing cores geographically for multi-site connectivity; in Operation Connect Carolina every site shared a common user database (UDM) and the same network identity (PLMN).[1][3]
Edge computing
Multi-access edge computing (MEC) support, with separate user plane functions per network slice connected to different data networks.[1][6]

Capacity (as stated by Cumucore)

Users and base stations
Optimized for up to 10,000 users or devices and up to 10 base stations.[1]

Features

Network slicing
A Network Slice Manager sets slice sizes, quality of service and traffic rules per slice, including priority and pre-emption, through the Cumucore Network Wizard graphical interface.[1]
TSN over 5G
A network-side TSN translator in the user plane function and a device-side translator in the user equipment; RCR Wireless News reported in February 2025 that Cumucore's first results showed a 41-microsecond offset between the network's grandmaster clock and the device clock.[4] In March 2026 Cumucore's CEO said its TSN over 5G core reached a time synchronization offset below 200 nanoseconds.[7]
Ethernet (Layer 2)
Cumucore says it implements Ethernet Layer 2 communication in a mobile private network.[2]

Management

Interface
Cumucore Network Wizard graphical interface for network and slice management.[1]

Licensing and support

Commercial model
Priced per base station per month, with a minimum base investment; Cumucore also describes packet core software as a service.[1]
Documentation
Product specifications and manuals are sent on request through a form on Cumucore's documentation page.[5]

Support terms

Public pricing

  • As listed on Cumucore's website on October 1, 2026: from €200 per month per base station, and a minimum base investment of €6,000 for a private installation with one base station covering about 1 km; the customer supplies the spectrum license. The page marks both prices with an asterisk but does not explain the conditions.[1]
