Overview

Arcus 4G Core is Blue Arcus's LTE core, an EPC (Evolved Packet Core) that the company says can run as a standalone system or as part of a larger network and scale from fewer than 100 to more than 1 million subscribers.[1][2] Blue Arcus says the software installs on any hardware, from a mini PC for an enterprise to a standalone server or a highly available cluster, with the control plane in a private or public cloud and the user plane at the edge.[2] The company describes its products as spectrum agnostic and says it has integrated its core with more than 20 RAN (radio access network) vendors.[3]

Specifications

Architecture

Core type
3GPP LTE EPC; the datasheet lists 4G S1 3GPP Release 15.[2]
Control and user plane separation
CUPS-based, with combined SGW-C/PGW-C/SMF control functions and a combined UPF/SGW-U/PGW-U user plane (serving gateway, packet gateway and user plane functions).[2]
Interfaces listed
S1, S6a, S11, S5, S8, SGi, Gx, Gy, Ro and SGs.[2]
Topologies
A single core serving multiple eNodeBs, or a distributed mesh of core nodes that synchronize their databases in real time and allow local traffic breakout and local call switching.[2]
Redundancy
Geo-redundant active-active primary and secondary cores that share load; if one fails, the remaining active nodes take all traffic.[2]

Deployment options

Hardware
Any hardware platform, including a network-in-a-box or virtualized platform; Blue Arcus shows a mini PC, a standalone server and a scalable cluster as options.[2]
Virtualization
Core modules run per virtual machine or as containerized network functions on a container orchestration platform, with individual functions scaled in or out.[2]
Cloud and edge
Control plane in a private or public cloud with the user plane at the edge.[2]

Capacity (as stated by Blue Arcus)

Subscribers
100 to more than 1 million; the control plane is listed at 1 million users.[2]
Sessions
100,000 PDU sessions and 100,000 active sessions on the user plane.[2]
Throughput
20 Gbps per instance, scaled by adding instances; the product page cites data throughput of up to 100+ Gbps.[2][1]
Radio sites
1 to more than 1,000 eNodeBs.[2]

Features and interfaces

Services
VoLTE (voice over LTE), internet data, SMS blast, roaming and CS fallback (CSFB) to 2G/3G voice and SMS over the SGs interface.[2]
Edge and policy
MEC (multi-access edge computing) with local traffic breakout, and flexible policy and charging control.[2]
External integration
Southbound interfaces for third-party RAN or Open RAN and northbound interfaces for billing and network management systems.[2]

Management

Element management
A web-based EMS (element management system) for performance, logs, alarms, database and configuration, with alarm notifications by email and SMS.[2]

Licensing

Model
Blue Arcus says server capacity is expanded through additional software licenses; prices and other terms are not published.[2]
