Overview

iCore is Tecore Networks' converged mobile core platform, which delivers 5G, LTE, HSPA+ and GSM core network functions from a single common code base, so operators can add newer generations without replacing hardware.[1] Tecore says iCore supports 5G in non-standalone (NSA) and standalone (SA) modes with a cloud-native, virtualized architecture that deploys on premises, in the cloud or at the network edge, including private 5G networks for enterprise, government and secure environments.[1] The same software runs across Tecore's hardware platforms, from portable Network in a Box units to rack-mounted Mobility Virtualized Platform servers, and underpins its managed access systems.[2][3]

Specifications

Architecture

Generations supported
5G NSA and SA, the full LTE EPC (Evolved Packet Core), HSPA+/UMTS and GSM on one platform; Tecore says adding LTE or 5G is a software upgrade for existing customers.[1]
5G SA status
Tecore's current core page says iCore supports both NSA and SA; an undated earlier iCore 4G LTE EPC data sheet listed 5G SA as in development.[1][2]
Core functions
Mobile switching center and visitor location register, MME (mobility management entity) and SAE gateway, HLR/HSS (home location register and home subscriber server), authentication and AAA, SMS and MMS centers, prepaid gateway, and SGSN/GGSN for 2G/3G packet data.[3]
Voice
Integrated media gateway and an IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) core supporting VoLTE (voice over LTE); the EPC also supports circuit-switched fallback.[3][2]
Platform
Carrier-grade, high-availability Linux on x86 hardware, in standalone or distributed architectures; Tecore holds two U.S. patents for its multiprotocol mobile switching platform.[1][3]

Deployment options

Where it runs
On premises, in the cloud, hybrid, or at the network edge.[3][1]
Hardware platforms
The EPC runs on Tecore's Network in a Box, Mobility Virtualized Platform (MVP) and LiTECore form factors.[2]
Compact LTE core
Tecore's LTE MicroCore data sheet describes a 1U standalone or 2U redundant configuration integrating HSS, MME, SGW, PGW and PCRF, for 1 to 8 eNodeBs and 100 to 2,500 subscribers.[4]

Capacity (as stated by Tecore)

EPC capacity by platform
Up to 5,000 SAUs (simultaneously attached users) on the 4G Network in a Box, 500,000 on MVP 2000, 750,000 on MVP 3000, 1,000,000 on MVP 4000 and 1,250,000 on MVP 5000, according to the iCore 4G LTE EPC data sheet.[2]
Availability target
The EPC data sheet lists 99.999% availability.[2]

Features and interfaces

EPC features
Integrated HSS with optional PCRF (policy and charging rules function), software-defined networking and network function virtualization, compliance with 3GPP Release 15 and later, and interoperability with other vendors' eNodeBs.[2]
Radio compatibility
Tecore lists interoperability with other RAN (radio access network) vendors.[3]
Management
One web-based graphical interface to manage every network function from 2G to 5G, accessible remotely with user credentials.[1]
