Overview

AT&T is a Dallas-based telecommunications company whose AT&T Business unit sells AT&T Private Cellular Networks, an on-premises network with a local LTE core (AT&T lists 5G as coming soon), dedicated on-site small cells and private SIMs.[1][2] AT&T sells it as a managed service covering design, installation, test and turn-up, software updates, hardware support and tier 1–3 support, and its product page presents CBRS (Citizens Broadband Radio Service) as the shared spectrum that makes such enterprise networks possible.[2] Published projects include a five-year, $10 million contract at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport that uses Nokia equipment for about 33 CBRS sites,[3] and a government-owned 5G network that AT&T designed for a U.S. Navy smart warehouse at Naval Base Coronado, California.[4]

At a glance

Headquarters
Dallas, Texas.[1][5]
Founded
AT&T Inc., formerly SBC Communications, was incorporated in Delaware in 1983 as one of the regional holding companies created to hold AT&T Corp.'s local telephone companies, and was spun off from AT&T Corp. on January 1, 1984.[1]
Ownership
Publicly traded; its common stock is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and NYSE Texas under the symbol T.[1]
Private network offering
AT&T Private Cellular Networks: a localized LTE core (5G listed as coming soon), dedicated on-site small cells, private SIMs and a Network Management Portal, sold with managed services.[2] AT&T says businesses in select countries outside the U.S. can also build private networks through it using in-country spectrum.[2]
Spectrum
CBRS. AT&T's product page explains CBRS's three access tiers and says it expects enterprises to be able to add licensed spectrum to CBRS-enabled private networks.[2] Light Reading reported in May 2022 that AT&T's private wireless work ranged from a CBRS network for an oil refinery to 5G on AT&T's licensed spectrum for smart city applications.[6] The FCC's Auction 105 results list the bidder AT&T Spectrum Frontiers as winning no CBRS Priority Access Licenses (PALs).[7]
Sales channel
Direct through AT&T Business sales.[2] AT&T says it can act either as prime integrator or as a partner to another company that holds the customer relationship.[6]
Notable U.S. customers
Dallas Fort Worth International Airport[5] and the U.S. Navy's NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center San Diego.[4] Light Reading's May 2022 list of AT&T's announced projects also included Samsung in Austin, Ford in Dearborn, the Texas A&M University System and Phillips 66.[6]
