Overview

Trilogy Networks and the Rural Cloud Initiative (RCI) built a private LTE network at Hurst Greenery, a greenhouse and farm business in Westboro, Missouri, as the first phase of a "Farm of the Future" pilot completed on September 30, 2020.[1] Celona supplied the network: outdoor access points in CBRS (Citizens Broadband Radio Service) spectrum, on-premises Evolved Packet Core software, SIM cards, and a cloud-hosted operations console.[1] The first application monitored temperature and humidity across about two acres of greenhouses and several acres of farmland, with Trilogy's edge cloud hosting the IoT services.[1][2]

Date reported
October 5, 2020.[1]
Spectrum
CBRS; GAA or PAL is not stated.[1]
Technology
Private LTE with Celona outdoor access points and on-premises EPC, connected to Trilogy Networks' LinX network and ConEx regional edge cloud.[1]
Scale as reported
About two acres of greenhouses and several acres of farmland for the first application.[1] Access point counts are not publicly stated; Future Farming published a photo of an antenna on a greenhouse roof.[2]
Vendors and roles
Celona: private LTE network.[1] Trilogy Networks: integration, long-haul LinX network, and ConEx edge cloud.[1] ClearBlade (IoT edge platform), Lanner Electronics (edge compute), Pluribus Networks (network fabric), IAMO Communications (fiber backhaul), Chat Mobility (area LTE coverage), and three data centers also took part.[1]
Integrator
Trilogy Networks.[1]
Status
Pilot: Phase 1 completed on September 30, 2020, and the release said it would move into production later in 2020.[1] We found no later public confirmation that the private LTE network entered production; a January 2023 release on a commercial greenhouse system at Hurst describes data collection over Veea Wi-Fi and other IoT radios and does not mention the LTE network.[3]

How the network is used

  • Real-time temperature and humidity monitoring in greenhouses and on farmland, letting the farm manage fans, heaters, and other equipment and receive alarms.[1]
  • Planned precision agriculture applications: sensors, monitoring devices, satellite mapping, drones, and robots.[1]
  • A model for delivering edge services to rural farms; the partners said another 2,300 farms in a two-state area could use the platform (remote and utility sites).[1]

Reported results

As reported by the sources below; not independently verified.

  • The farm's owner, Blake Hurst, said the first phase would produce a 10% increase in efficiency and profit. This is a projection, not a measured result.[1][2]

Timeline
