Overview

Dutch integrator Koning & Hartman built a private LTE network at the Port of Rotterdam using Druid Software's Raemis core and Airspan base stations, on spectrum the Dutch regulator licenses for local use.[1][2] Druid announced an expansion of this port-automation reference site on March 5, 2019.[2] In an August 2019 interview, Druid said the network runs in the 3.7 GHz Band 43 and had grown from an early pilot to more than 500 connected and autonomous vehicles and 19 eNodeBs (LTE base stations).[3] Druid and RCR Wireless describe the network in Rotterdam's container terminals, while Airspan's case study lists the Port of Rotterdam Authority as the end user.[3][4]

At a glance

Organization
Reported as Port of Rotterdam container terminals; Airspan's case study names the Port of Rotterdam Authority as end user. No terminal operator is named.[3][4]
Location
Port of Rotterdam, Netherlands.[1]
Date reported
Expansion announced March 5, 2019; scale figures given in August 2019.[2][3]
Spectrum
Licensed 3.7 GHz Band 43 (B43), issued by the Dutch regulator for local use.[3][1]
Technology
Private LTE (4G).[3][2]
Scale as reported
More than 500 connected and autonomous vehicles and 19 eNodeBs as of August 2019, according to Druid.[3]
Vendors and roles
Druid Software: Raemis edge core and network management; Airspan Networks: carrier-grade base stations.[2][4]
Integrator
Koning & Hartman, a Dutch technology company.[2][1]
Status
Operating as of August 2019; we found no later public update on its scale.[3]

How the network is used

  • Port automation: real-time positioning and control of unmanned vehicles, which Koning & Hartman said needs dedicated capacity and very low latency (ports and terminals).[2]
  • Private communication, site automation and IoT connectivity.[1]

Reported results

As reported by the sources below; not independently verified.

  • RCR Wireless reported that more than 12 million containers a year are shipped across Druid's cellular IoT solution in Rotterdam's container terminals.[3]
  • Druid said a public network core could not meet the roughly 20 ms latency the use cases required in Rotterdam, so the design uses an on-site edge core for low latency and redundancy.[3]
  • Druid and Koning & Hartman said the network gives easier control and management, greater efficiency and a safer workplace.[2]

Timeline

  1. Druid tells RCR Wireless the network has scaled to more than 500 vehicles and 19 eNodeBs on Band 43.[3]

  2. RCR Wireless reports the extended private LTE setup at the Port of Rotterdam.[1]

  3. Druid Software announces an expansion of its Rotterdam port-automation reference site with Koning & Hartman.[2]

How to interpret this record

This record keeps the source's anonymous customer label and reported status. A case study does not establish current operation, reproducible performance, or independent verification.
