Overview

Newmont deployed Ericsson Private 5G at its Cadia gold-copper mine in New South Wales, Australia, to run teleremote (remote-controlled) bulldozers on a tailings dam wall construction area, keeping operators out of a high-risk zone.[1][2] Ericsson announced the deployment on April 14, 2025, calling it the first use of private 5G for teleremote dozing.[1] The network replaced Wi-Fi that, according to Ericsson, could connect no more than two machines at up to about 100 m and could cause downtime of half a 12-hour shift or more while it was fixed.[1] iTnews reported that Newmont sees the project as part of a longer-term plan to use 5G at its tier-one surface and underground mines.[3]

At a glance

Organization
Newmont (Cadia operation).[1]
Location
Cadia gold-copper mine in western New South Wales, Australia; the tailings works construction area of the surface operation.[3][1]
Date announced
April 14, 2025.[1]
Technology
Ericsson Private 5G with dual-mode 4G/5G core and radios and cloud-based management.[2] Ericsson says it used its 5G Antenna Integrated Radio with Massive MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) and its Uplink Booster feature.[1]
Scale as reported
Ericsson says a single 5G radio covers the width of the tailings works area, up to 2.5 km, with up to 175 Mbps uplink, enough for up to 12 dozers if needed.[1]
Vendors and roles
Ericsson supplied the private 5G radio, core and management.[2]
Status
In use for dozing as of the April 2025 announcement.[1]

How the network is used

  • Teleremote dozing for tailings dam wall construction, with operators working away from the high-risk area (remote and utility sites).[2]
  • Video-based remote control of the dozer fleet, which Ericsson's announcement ties to the network's uplink throughput.[1]

Reported results

As reported by the sources below; not independently verified.

  • Ericsson's case study reports an immediate 50% increase in dozing capacity and up to 25% more material moved per shift.[2]
  • Ericsson's case study reports field-tested uplink above 370 Mbps at more than 500 m, against a Wi-Fi range of roughly 100–200 m, and says coverage grew from 100 m to 3,000 m while keeping uplink above 100 Mbps.[2]
  • Ericsson's April 2025 announcement gives different headline figures: up to 2.5 km of coverage from one radio with up to 175 Mbps uplink.[1]
  • Ericsson says the Wi-Fi trailers previously moved around the site were no longer needed, and quotes Newmont's Chris Twaddle saying a single installer set up the system and had 5G-connected equipment running in a couple of hours.[2]

Timeline

  1. iTnews reports the rollout; it notes Cadia's underground operations already run teleremote through a separate setup by Epiroc, Macleans and Orica.[3]

  2. Ericsson announces Newmont's 5G teleremote dozer fleet at Cadia.[1]
