Overview

Samsung deployed a private 5G network at Hyundai Motor Company's Ulsan Plant in South Korea in October 2024, which Samsung calls the world's largest single automobile plant, producing about 6,000 vehicles a day.[1][2] Hyundai says it put private 5G into mass production at Ulsan that month, running dozens of automated guided vehicles (AGVs), after setting up a private 5G testbed in Korea in late 2022.[3] On February 26, 2025, the companies said they had completed what they called the industry's first end-to-end RedCap (Reduced Capability 5G) trial on a private 5G network, tested at Samsung's Suwon R&D campus with Hyundai's vehicle-inspection equipment.[1][3] RCR Wireless reported that the Ulsan network uses Korea's local 4.7 GHz band.[2]

Technology
Private 5G with RedCap support; Samsung's solution includes a virtualized 5G core, baseband units, radios and an integrated network management system. Standalone or non-standalone is not stated.[1]
Scale as reported
Dozens of AGVs in mass production; radio counts and coverage area are not stated.[3]
Vendors and roles
Samsung Networks: private 5G core, RAN and management. Hyundai's D Scan inspection device uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon X35 5G Modem-RF System.[1]
Integrator
Not publicly stated beyond Samsung.
Status
In mass production use as of February 2025; Hyundai planned to add private 5G to its new EV-dedicated plant in Ulsan opening in 2026.[3]

How the network is used

  • AGVs that deliver parts to production lines (manufacturing and industrial IoT).[1][3]
  • Connecting devices and manufacturing systems across the plant for real-time data upload and download.[1]
  • Wireless vehicle inspection with Hyundai's Diagnostic Scan (D Scan) equipment, which checks assembly before cars are released (RedCap trial).[1]
  • Planned RedCap uses: sensors, cameras, tablets, logistics robots, compact wireless tools and test equipment.[1][2]

Reported results

As reported by the sources below; not independently verified.

  • Hyundai says private 5G at its plants in Korea and the U.S. significantly reduced communication disruptions, and that a patented dual 5G and Wi-Fi setup has produced zero communication-related downtime since deployment.[3]
  • Samsung says the RedCap trial delivered smoother, real-time inspection data transmission than the old Wi-Fi system.[1]
  • Hyundai says Samsung's RedCap-optimized software more than doubles uplink capacity and reduces device power use.[3]

Timeline

  1. Samsung and Hyundai announce the completed RedCap trial ahead of MWC 2025.[1][2]

  2. RedCap end-to-end testing begins at Samsung's Suwon R&D campus with Hyundai inspection equipment.[1][3]

  3. Samsung's private 5G goes into mass production use at the Ulsan Plant.[1][3]

  4. Hyundai sets up a private 5G testbed in Korea in late 2022.[3]
