Overview

JMA XRAN is virtualized RAN baseband software for 4G and 5G that runs on commercial off-the-shelf servers, switches and transport instead of dedicated baseband hardware, according to JMA Wireless.[1] JMA says XRAN virtualizes every layer of the radio stack, including Layer 1, and pairs it with its CellHub radios and DAS (distributed antenna system) platforms for in-building, private and carrier networks.[2][3] JMA says the platform moves to new 5G releases through software upgrades rather than hardware replacement.[2][1]

Specifications

Architecture

Product type
Standards-compliant virtualized cloud RAN (baseband) software for 4G and 5G[1]
Protocol stack
Layers 1 through 3 processed in software, without hardware accelerators for the baseband function, according to a JMA and Intel solution brief[4][2]
Hosting options
Cloud, customer premises, or a hybrid split between the two[4]
Server platform
The JMA and Intel brief (undated) cites Intel Xeon E5 v4 servers with 8 cores for a mid-sized deployment and 18 cores for a large one; current server requirements are not publicly stated[4]
Fronthaul
O-RAN 7-2x fronthaul to a third-party O-RU was demonstrated at the O-RAN PlugFest, running LTE on Band 7 and NR on n3 in non-standalone mode, as JMA reported in February 2022[5]

Radio capabilities

Technologies
4G LTE and 5G[1]; the JMA and Intel brief also lists LTE-M, NB-IoT, public-safety bands and CBRS processing in software[4]
Spectrum
JMA describes its platform as supporting licensed, shared, mmWave and CBRS spectrum for 4G and 5G[1]
Platform performance claims
JMA says its private wireless platform exceeds 1 Gbps on CBRS using five-channel carrier aggregation with 4x4 MIMO, and supports more than 5,000 concurrent UE connections per cell[1]
Multi-operator
Multi-operator RAN sharing and spectrum slicing, per JMA[1]
5G standalone support

Compatible radios

JMA radios
CellHub radios and TEKO DAS, with CellHub using XRAN for its baseband processing[3][4]
Third-party radios
O-RAN 7-2x radio units, as demonstrated with an MTI O-RU at the 2022 PlugFest[5]

Management

Operations interface
Web-based Operations Platform for configuration, policy and monitoring, with role-based and tiered access, usable from cloud or on-premises deployments[4][3]
