Overview

Nokia Digital Automation Cloud Private Wireless with MX Industrial Edge (DAC PW/MXIE) is Nokia's end-to-end, subscription-based private wireless service that combines 4.9G/LTE and 5G radios, on-premises edge computing and industrial devices.[1] The MX Industrial Edge (MXIE) server hosts the core network functions on site and also runs containerized industrial applications from Nokia and third parties.[1][2] Nokia operates the network functions as a service and manages radio, core, edge, devices, SIMs and applications through DAC Manager, while production traffic stays inside the facility.[1] Nokia positions DAC for OT (operational technology) and mission-critical industrial operations; its white paper discusses plants, utilities, transportation and water treatment, and the smaller DAC PW Compact variant targets warehouses.[3][1][4]

Specifications

Components

Access points
Industrial-grade access points for harsh indoor and outdoor environments, backhauled over Ethernet or fiber to the core.[1]
Core and edge
MX Industrial Edge hosts the core network functions, including the 5G standalone UPF, SMF and AMF, and runs edge applications on the same platform.[1]
Management
Nokia DAC Manager gives a single view of radio, core, edge, devices, SIMs and applications; the central DAC cloud handles orchestration, monitoring and lifecycle management over a secured management channel.[1]
Devices
Nokia describes the service as including industrial devices; the paper lists sensors, robots, PLCs, worker handhelds and gateways as connected device types.[1]
Compact variant
Nokia DAC PW Compact, for warehouses and micro-fulfillment centers, uses AirScale Shikra indoor radios, a baseband unit, MXIE and DAC Manager.[4]

Technology and spectrum

Radio technologies
4.9G/LTE and 5G standalone (SA) with 5G New Radio; Nokia says the choice depends on available spectrum and required features.[1]
Spectrum
Licensed or locally licensed spectrum.[1] Nokia says DAC PW Compact is available in the U.S. using CBRS (Citizens Broadband Radio Service) spectrum.[4]
Mobility
Make-before-break handovers for AGVs, AMRs, cranes, trains and vehicles across large sites, according to Nokia.[1]
Quality of service
QoS differentiation and network slicing to prioritize safety-relevant or control traffic over best-effort data.[1]
Not publicly stated
SAS (Spectrum Access System) arrangement

Deployment and architecture

Data path
Local breakout: the user plane terminates on premises on MXIE and hands traffic to the plant network at firewall-controlled points; the DAC cloud is not used for production data.[1]
Resilience
Nokia cites redundant components, network healing algorithms and geo-redundant deployment options.[1]
Security framework
Nokia's July 2026 white paper maps the solution to the Purdue model and the IEC 62443 standards; it says component certifications should be verified per project.[1]
Device identity
SIM or eSIM authentication with 3GPP mutual authentication and over-the-air encryption by default.[1]
Not publicly stated
Capacity (devices, throughput, coverage)

Commercial terms

Service model
Subscription-based private wireless service operated by Nokia.[1] MXIE is offered as a hybrid model (server hardware bought up front plus software subscription) or a full hardware-and-software subscription.[2]
Sales channel (U.S.)
Nokia says DAC PW Compact is sold only through Nokia-certified resellers and integrators, naming Future Technologies, Graybar, DXC Technology and Trilogy in North America.[4]

What’s included

  • 4.9G/LTE or 5G radios, on-premises MX Industrial Edge compute and industrial devices, delivered as a subscription service.[1]

Public pricing

  • Subscription service; Nokia does not publish list prices. MXIE is available under hybrid (hardware purchase plus software subscription) or full subscription models.[2]
